Solared powered roadways – you can’t get more greener than that!

Thanks to Rob Edwards for showing us this video – in the US there are a team of people creating a power efficient road, a solar road. The idea is to take the solar rays and convert then to energy and power nearby homes and potentially electric vehicles.

A 4 lane road, one mile long could generate enough energy to power 500 homes.

From the video there are an interesting set of safety applications – if you cross the central reservation it flashes up on the road indicating you should slow down – imagine how this could be used for traffic updates en route.

It seems like the only down side is the ‘prohibitive’ cost, that it would cost billions to replace the roads. I am all for being greener and something like this makes a lot of sense, so I can’t see how the cost is prohibitive – surely it’s more damaging to stay with tarmac’d roads?

Solar roadways – it’s something we should be keeping an eye on, it looks like it has some extraordinary applications, you can volunteer as well if you want to help the project along.
