The new spin on Just-In-Time-Delivery

I have just read an interesting article on supply chain logistics and how the amounts that are being delivered are shrinking.

A new spin on just in time delivery

No opportunity to leave a comment there on the article :(

The article mentions a company called Schneider Logistics who are now using systems to accurately track all aspects of the supply chain for larger customers and in turn the customers are holding less stock, and delivery is on demand.

This is something that is very interesting for the same day courier industry and eventually we;ll reach the point when manufacturing happens on demand, across the board. Car manufacturers followed Toyotas lead and have installed systems that enable faster delivery from orderbook to doorstep. Supermarkets are now ordering in smaller half pallets, and where supermarkets lead the smaller chains will follow.

For the same day courier this means more ad hoc work rather than regular contracts, although it won’t  mean less lorries on the road. Well not yet anyway.
