A quick look at the greener aspects of Vancouver 2010 winter Olympics

I shall make no apology for the Olympics blogs, when it comes to 2012 and London – you’ll thank me for them!

As I may have mentioned… last week I spent a fantastic week in Vancouver looking at the Winter Olympic Games, from a business point of view. This Olympic Games was branded a greener Olympics and the Canadians did exceptionally well, although some may say it was browner rather than greener due to the lack of snow ;-)

As a courier service, we are interested in the transportation aspect of the Olympics. Transportation comes in 2 guises – movement of goods and movement of people. In case you didn’t know, the Olympics are the biggest non war related movement of people worldwide. That’s a lot of people to transport.

Transporting people
With over 350,000 people descending into Vancouver, there can be no margin for error. Vancouver has spent a lot of time and money on making the transportation as green as possible. If we were awarding medals, public transport would get a gold. With a newly built Skytrain system collecting people from the airport and transporting them to downtown Vancouver, and then all subway, streetcars, sea buses and buses were free if your were Olympic ticket holders. Traffic in the area is down 30% as people when given the option of driving or using public transport, chose public transport. An important lesson for the London 2012 Games here.

If you decided to cycle you could park your bicycles for free for the duration of the event with the Bicycle Valet company.

The local seaplane company is carbon neutral and free transport via buses was available up to the mountain events too.

Transporting goods

The local courier companies in Vancouver adapted well to the Olympics, many trained up on foot and bicycle couriers to get around any traffic issues, whilst there is less on the roads, there was more congestion with the Torch Relay and Protests.

So far there are no tales of woe like there were at the Atlanta Games, which is a good thing – it means lessons have been learned.

The greener flavour

As I mentioned at the top, these Games have had a greener flavour. There are many examples of creatively used items to recycle and reuse. The Olympic and Paralympic Village in Whistler reuses captured methane gas from a former landfill site for energy. The main heat source for the communities is waste heat recovered from the wastewater treatment system.

The roof of the Richmond Oval has been marveled over by many, the wood reclaimed from parasites and instead of being destroyed, it is now a much admired soon to be city treasure.

It’s hard not to be impressed by the efforts made by the Canadians to leave a legacy with a smaller carbon footprint than most.

I hope London 2012 gains inspiration and can deliver the same, if not better :-) .

Time critical deliveries from couriers and saving you money

Courier delivery services can save time for either individuals or businesses.

There are times throughout the year that we need either a local or long-distance deliveries for gifts or other time sensitive packages. These types of delivery services can ensure that your package arrives on time, as agreed.

You’ll find that these services will provide you with the comfort of knowing that your package is safe, and of course in good hands.

Even if there is plenty of time, talk to your courier service about getting the items delivered sooner.  Last minute planning puts a premium on these kinds of courier services.

Depending on the company you choose, it could be a large operation, right down to a one-man and his van.  Furthermore, you can have regularly scheduled pick-ups and drop-offs to specific locations (known as multi-drop), or to drop off points that are predetermined by the delivery service. These predetermined drop-off points will more likely be less expensive than the latter.

The biggest time savings when using a courier or van delivery come in the the form of saving you hours arranging quotes and chasing prices.

Quite simply an excellent service will save you hours on the phone, hours that you should be using to generate sales in your business and elsewhere.  Often a courier company will get a quote into a company and a company will ring round trying to save two or three pounds on a delivery! On one hundred packages, that’s a big difference but on one item?

An hour later they call back and book the service – in that hour they have called lots of people for quotes. The cost of the phone calls and the cost of the person making them is far more expensive than the saving made!

Business Scene Essex, our recent event

Last Wednesday was the last Business Scene Essex event for 2009. We were expertly hosted by Mercedes Benz at Lakeside, and the refreshments were supplied by BT Tradespace.

We had to excellent speakers for the event, Baiju Solanki, who spoke about goals in sport and business. He made some excellent points about fixed goals and working towards them. The Sports world loss of Baiju is the Business worlds gain, and what a gain we made.

We also heard the wise words from Alan Stevens, the media coach. His talk about twitter put it into a new perspective for many people, and the feedback regarding both speakers was excellent.

We didn’t do our planned hookup with Essex, Massachusetts due to staff shortages. Maybe this will take place at the next event.

A big thanks goes to Katherine Davison from Epiphany training, who helped me co-ordinate the event. Quite simply all our daughters are born in September and October, so to plan an event at the same time as the birthday celebrations was a bit of a crazy idea! Also thanks to Ian Hendry from WeCanDo.biz who helped to market the event through his CRM package (this is something well worth checking out)!

Look forward to organising some more great multi network events in 2010.
