Delivering wedding gifts

Today’s blog is rather topical – delivering wedding gifts.

First congrats to Kate and William, we hope your day goes well and that your married lives  are filled with happiness.

Second, who is going to move all the gifts after the wedding?

In the case of the Royal wedding their will be staff on hand to pack the gifts up and transport them back to their new home. Their biggest problem is loading the vehicles safely so that items are not broken.

For not so affluent newlyweds  family help out and transport items back to their home. Again careful loading needs to take place.

If you have your gifts in a room at a hotel, be careful!

It has been known for a distracted receptionist to allow the wrong people in to collect the wedding gifts and for the gifts never to bee seen again! That’s no way to start a relationship :(  Collecting gifts from a room in a hotel will always be precarious for just one person, the room is open, the vehicle is in the carpark and it can take time to load and reload. Be vigilant and get help!

Larger wedding gifts can always be delivered direct to the bride and groom, along with any really valuable items.

Anyone need a Tiara delivering?

Moving your entire commercial kitchen by courier service

Most  mobile catering companies I know have their own vehicles and they use a courier service as a back up when moving their commercial kitchen equipment. Moving a commercial kitchen is a structured ordered system that the staff of mobile catering companies are proficient in. catering kitchen

When we move mobile catering equipment I have always found that all I need to do or have one of our drivers do is safely load and unload the vehicles – the staff know how to dismantle the items and what order they need to be loaded, so that when unloading the items such as stainless steel work surfaces come off the vehicles first. Then the equipment that is unloaded can be stacked onto the work surfaces.

In these scenarios the courier service is left to do what it does best – driving the equipment to it’s end destination.

Moving a fixed commercial kitchen is much rarer, often we move one or two items such as the oven or the grill or the fridges.

The fridges do have to be measured before booking a vehicle – sometimes they are too tall for a normal van, they need a curtain side vehicle or to be laid on their side, which we all know unsettles their gases and can cause problems later on.

Dishwashers are loaded with ease, take care to strap down the rinsing shower if it has one (normally on a pass through dishwasher) and tape the trays internally so they don’t move around and scratch the interior. It always pays to check the Dishwasher has actually been unloaded first ;-) although we have moved some loaded ones and not broken a thing, it cannot be guaranteed to deliver things in the centre of a dishwasher safe every time.

Ice machines, bottle coolers and hotplates are all smaller items that can be co loaded onto smaller vehicles with ease. Vegetable racks and pots and pans are best crated up for delivery, we recommend tea crates or plastic packing crates for this, and if you don’t have any then they can be hired locally.

The heavy parts aside from commercial kitchen equipment I have found is the crockery. A busy catering kitchen has a tonne of dishes, plates and glassware that needs to be packed and moved safely – get someone who is good at packing to do this. The safe delivery of crockery always comes down to how well it is packaged.

One final tip, when moving a commercial kitchen listen to what the chef has to say, they know their equipment inside out – how to dismantle it, how to pack it and how to store it.

If you are looking to move your commercial kitchen, give us a call we are always happy to help.

Parcel Couriers are the fastest option…

Courier Services Are More Than About Delivering Parcels Quickly (or are they?)

With the holiday season already upon us, it is time for online retailers to start thinking about getting their goods to their customers in the safest and speediest way. However, whilst delivering parcels speedily is an important concern, there are other things to bear in mind.

Cost is of course important; particularly as recovery from the recession is still in its early stages.

However, this can be used to your advantage of course. It is likely you have proposals already in your desk, but when challenging them remember that a cost reduction can compromise service levels.

You may not necessarily be able to get their rates lowered though; so ask for more for your money. Are twenty four hour help lines included for example? What about a personal account manager? All these things can be asked for. Remember though, it’s a two way street – be prepared to give a little in the form of guaranteed minimum orders etc.

But of course, delivering parcels safely is the most important (along with delivering on time). Be sure to fully understand what compensation measures are in place for any failures regards this.  Often your high value and most precious items are not covered by the insurance or the insurance is based upon the weight of an item.

Courier services perform extremely well by and large, and they are measured by their speed and customer service. They do not make a habit of breaking or damaging items of course; it just isn’t good business sense! But make sure you are covered in all eventualities.

You can of course do it yourself with regards delivering parcels safely to your customers too; by ensuring the products are well packaged and protected. It’s a nice touch for your best customers, but you will need to have a chat with Nigel Grainger about minimising your corporate manslaughter risks if you do.

Happy deliveries!

What do you want your courier to do?

Everyone wants their business to run smoothly. They understand the need for excellent customer service and a speedy response time, they like to manage their overheads and keep costs low, but profits high. Yet time and time again they use a courier so inappropriately, it’s often not worth using one at all.

Firstly many companies waste valuable time ringing too many companies for a quote, for a service they do not provide. Then they hit upon a courier company that does have the service they require, they then start to haggle over the price! Often making several phone calls and wasting even more their staffs time. Often the saving is so negligible, it has cost the company more money in wasted time than money saved by shopping around.

The goods get collected and dispatched and everyone is happy. Except for the customer, parcel companies tend to only deliver in office hours and the customer was at work, and missed the delivery.

The business didn’t think to ask if it could be delivered to the customers workplace, they didn’t get all the details in place at the time or order – they were busy making sure everything ran smoothly elsewhere. Only a lack of information gathering has meant that the customer has had to drive 20 miles to an out of town depot to collect their goods from the courier. The customer isn’t very happy, he doesn’t think very much about the company they have ordered off of, and he wants his delivery charges refunded as they have the hassle of driving out of town when they shouldn’t of had to .

The business likes to keep their customers happy, and likes things calm, so they refund the delivery charges and the customer is happy too, but he doesn’t forget his experience and who knows who he might tell.

Research is often an underrated tool in business, but some research before time wasting would have saved the business money and kept the customer happy at all times. With a tougher business climate can you afford to lose business

  • By booking the wrong type  courier service?
  • By not communicating with your customer properly?

Do you ever leave the office at the end of the day wishing your business didn’t need a courier service?
