Business Scene Essex, our recent event

Last Wednesday was the last Business Scene Essex event for 2009. We were expertly hosted by Mercedes Benz at Lakeside, and the refreshments were supplied by BT Tradespace.

We had to excellent speakers for the event, Baiju Solanki, who spoke about goals in sport and business. He made some excellent points about fixed goals and working towards them. The Sports world loss of Baiju is the Business worlds gain, and what a gain we made.

We also heard the wise words from Alan Stevens, the media coach. His talk about twitter put it into a new perspective for many people, and the feedback regarding both speakers was excellent.

We didn’t do our planned hookup with Essex, Massachusetts due to staff shortages. Maybe this will take place at the next event.

A big thanks goes to Katherine Davison from Epiphany training, who helped me co-ordinate the event. Quite simply all our daughters are born in September and October, so to plan an event at the same time as the birthday celebrations was a bit of a crazy idea! Also thanks to Ian Hendry from WeCanDo.biz who helped to market the event through his CRM package (this is something well worth checking out)!

Look forward to organising some more great multi network events in 2010.

A Courier for your Gym Equipment

With summer almost upon us, people turn to getting fit. With gym equipment bargains to be had on Ebay, BT Tradespace and other online stores, the next consideration is the courier for delivery

Gym Equipment suitable for Courier Delivery

Gym Equipment suitable for Courier Delivery

What can be moved by same day or overnight courier?

  • Exercise bikes
  • Rowing machine
  • Bench Press
  • Elliptical trainers
  • Treadmills
  • Weight machine
  • Star climbers

Ideally items would be dismantled and in their original packaging, it makes it easier to load and strap into place. It it’s unable to be sent  in it’s original packaging, then we can still collect and deliver for you – it can be wrapped in our soft felt blankets.

Gym equipment for the parcel networks

  • Exercise balls
  • Exercise bands
  • Chin bars
  • Some abdominal trainers
  • Some small weights

When packing weights for transportation you need to make sure the box can take the combined weights and packaging is strong enough and that the box won’t collapse when lifted. Exercise balls need to be defalted for posting and abdominable trainers need to fit in a box, but be sure they are not putting you over the volumetric weight that your parcel company takes.

If you require any advice about getting your gym equipment please give us a call on 0800 917 7084

Essex Courier company co-sponsors a Business Networking event in Brentwood

On Thursday 29th Jan 2009, Arrow Light Haulage sponsored a Business Scene event with Regus and BT Tradespace in Brentwood Essex.

Networking event sponsored by essex courier company, Arrow Light Haulage

The evening was a huge success with 96 attendees who enjoyed guest speaker/networking expert Andy Lopata

Over £200 was raised for the charity Hope and Aid Direct. Hope and Aid Direct is run by Charles Storer who regularly packs up his 7.5 tonne lorry and drives it across Europe to the Balkans, to provide aid for those that the rest of the world has forgot. Charles is based in Ingatestone and fund raises locally to make a difference in children’s lives.

Arrow Light Haulage hand over the charity raffle money

Here is Sarah and Regus Manager Robert Brett handing the raffle money to Charles.

I thought it was amazing so many came out to Brentwood in a cold January night to get to know lots of local people. What better way of beating the recession than doing business together?

The feedback from the event has been overwhelmingly positive and Sarah plans to organise the next event in April at Stansted. She is looking for event sponsors and raffle prizes to help raise funds for Hope and Aid Direct. If you want details of the next event, just sign up to Business Scene in Essex and we will keep you up to date.

Kevin

More information on Hope and Aid Direct can be found on their website, they are next taking a convey at Easter, if you can make a donation please do so.

Courier 2.0 part deux, The Final Delivery….

Yesterday I blogged about our introduction as a courier company into the world of web 2.0 you can read that here – Courier 2.0

After BT Tradespace, I found the nice people at the Sales and Marketing Forum and I chatted to other people about their web experiences, and found many people who would share advice and what worked for them. I took part in a business card exchange and of the people that sent me cards was a graphic designer called Mark Ballantyne, he now has his own business forum – UK Business Labs .It’s one of my favourite places.

Web 2.0 is good for business

I was beginning to see many connections with people and many chances of working collaboratively. I decided at this point I was going to break out and actually have our own business blog instead of using ones in other forums!

We chatted to Mark Graves and he put us together the blog on The Courier Shop and a few months later, the blog on Arrow Light Haulage. In August this year I changed from a plain Kubrick theme to the dark and broodier road theme, I did try the blue skies open road theme, but that didn’t look too great!

The final delivery…

Well, when I started out on the road of web 2.0 I thought it had an end. But It doesn’t. I have added Zemanta reblogging tools, retaggr and loads of other widgets and grown from one experimental blog to 8 full on blogs

Our latest project is a blogsite called Freight Emergency, 2 years ago I had never heard of a blog!

I wonder what the future holds?  will it be delivery videos on you tube? podcasts of me twittering about delivery facts and figures? Viral games and Facebook widgets? who knows! but I am sure I will get round to it in the end!

Courier 2.0 part one….

Whilst chatting to a group of friends I mentioned that a contact on Twitter had called me ‘The most digitally visible courier in the UK’ :-) Not a lot of couriers use twitter, which is a shame as you can tweet your drivers directly to their mobile phones. This is handy to warn them of traffic, accidents etc. Then when I was saying “I wonder what I should be writing on my blog this week…” one of the suggestions that came back was I should write about what it means to be Courier 2.0… It may be funny, but I thought it was a good idea :-)

Web 2.0 is generally defined as the internet after the crash of 1999, the next phase of the internet.

Well, web 2.0 is a bit of a catch-all which covers a broad range of new online services, user-generated content, communities and social networking tools. The most popular are sites such as Blogger, Flickr, MySpace, YouTube and Wikipedia and the Godfather of web 2.0 – Google. The phrase also refers to the creation of far greater levels of interactivity, not just between users, or between users and the internet but between complementary online services through mash-ups and web services.

We have always used the technology available for our business, and to make life easier and safer for our drivers (and for us too). We were one of the first courier companies in the UK to embrace Satellite Navigation. I can recall Kevin showing a bemused group of other couriers how Mrs Hawkings (our affectionate name for the Sat Nav) worked. A year later they all had them! The effective use of technology allowed us to win the prestigious Thames Gateway Business Awards 2007. We also fully utilise vehicle tracking GPS technology, but lets get back to the web.

Well, we first started Social Media networking (or chatting online to your mates) when we joined the Courier Exchange 6 years ago. The Courier Exchange is the leading Freight Exchange in the UK and Europe, and we met many other couriers here and then began networking with them. We still meet several times a year and discuss industry related issues.

They have submitted a video to You Tube, it’s worth a watch :-)

Last year I joined BT Tradespace. It was here I learned to ‘blog’, write short internet diaries about work related things and 116 blogs later…. we are still going strong and part of the community! We are thrilled that BT Tradespace actually invited us to a lunch with them at the end of October, it will be good to meet some of the people behind the pics at last. Tradespace also have a behind the scenes community, they are very helpful and supportive of each other, and share tips to get the best of the Tradespace forum.

I have just read this back, and it’s a bigger blog than intended! so I will post the next part as Courier 2.0 part 2  – The Final Delivery (and if that sounds a bit Hollywood Sequal-ish that’s possibly because I have just found out there is a TV series called Courier 2.0!) ;-)
