Fuel stabilisers and fuel costs.

Good news for us motorists, or so it would seem. On the other hand some news reports are suggesting that unless motorists pay for all the potholes to be filled in, the roads will be virtually undriveable anyway.

The Government is hinting strongly that it won’t be adding the 1p per litre fuel tax at the next budget. At the moment it costs £102.00 to fill our Transit up with conventional fuel and £60 with LPG. This of pushes up the price of delivery.

As one person said on the Facebook update at the weekend “Filling your car up is a better diet than weight watchers, you can’t afford to eat and run a car”.

Think about it from a business point of view, how can the customer keep paying for goods that are increasing in price constantly? They can’t, wages are not keeping up with the cost of living and as a business creeping expenses have to be watched carefully.

Let’s hope the proposed fuel stabiliser is pushed through and the cut in costs is passed on. It was rumoured that inflated prices were being charged in supermarket filling stations as they had had a poor trading quarter. How much truth there was in that rumour I don’t know. What I do know is Tesco is currently more expensive by 3p a litre than our local Jet garage. Traditionally it was the other way around.

There are still talks of rural area discounts which would be a step in the right direction. But what counts as rural? Some parts of Essex like Burnham on Crouch are remote, the Dengie and parts of Colchester. These areas may not be considered rural but having worked extensively in these areas for the last 10 years, I’d have a hard time convincing the residents who can get a bus to Chelmsford on a Monday, but the return bus isn’t until Wednesday.

Fuel and fuel prices are going to be on everyones lips for the foreseeable future.

Let’s hope it’s because the price is finally coming down again.

Harness Social Media to Increase Your Sales – Thurrock

Arrow Light Haulage is thrilled to be involved with the social media workshop day in Thurrock, Essex.

We are loaning KTIA and UEL our Communications Director, Sarah Arrow and she will be providing support (as well as being living proof) that social media is useful to small businesses. As you may already know, Sarah is the most followed courier on twitter, she has more followers than DHL, Fedex and UPS combined, proving that you don’t have to be big to be found, you just have to say something interesting!

Sarah tells me that communication is a two way street so she follows people back, something that a lot of social media experts have stopped doing as they have been overwhelmed by Direct Messages from their fans. You can tell what you think on this in the comments below.

Van deliveries in Essex

The last few days we have been working predominantly in Essex, and nothing pleases us more than driving through beautiful countryside instead of big towns and cities.

As you can see they were unexpectedly empty, so we have to be a bit more vigilant than normal conditions, our drivers cannot be lulled into a false sense of security, that is when accidents can happen.

Snow? Some businesses are still doing business in Essex

Essex in the snow is very beautiful, but quite lethal. I have been out and about and here are a few photos of various parts of Essex.  I am impressed by the Romford Market traders who continued, business as usual yesterday. They even had customers come out and shopping, although the cobbles were very dangerous with the ice.

Local shops are busy, which is a good sign – remember how they support their local communities in adverse times.

Courier hub services

The ‘Hub and Spoke’ system is how many next day courier and parcel courier services work. All the items are collected and delivered into a central hub and then the drivers become the ‘spokes’ delivering outbound to the customers.

This system works well when you have a lot of cargo or freight to be delivered in  a local area.

We operate two hub systems, one in Basildon Essex where items come in from various locations around the county and are then sifted and sent out again. The other hub we operate is in Kent, it does exactly the same as the Essex hub but in the Kent area.

Why do courier hubs work?

Courier hubs work for two reasons, one is a mass  sorting and sifting system that a parcel carrier uses. They operate most effectively on volume. Low cost, high volume parcel delivery.

The second reason a hub works is based on a local hub system, this is ideal for companies with a large consignment of freight that is destined to go to certain areas. These are dropped into a local depot and sifted and despatched via the spoke system.  Local courier hubs are fantastic for fragile items where in the parcel system they risk breakage, the local hub virtually eliminates this. The local hubs can often place their hands on the item you are looking for within minutes, a parcel hub it can take longer.

It’s a question of working out which service, is best for the items you are moving. Cargo or freight in the wrong courier hub system, will mean more breakages and damage so it’s essential you talk to your courier company and decide what is best for the type of goods you want delivering.
