Parcel Couriers are the fastest option…

Courier Services Are More Than About Delivering Parcels Quickly (or are they?)

With the holiday season already upon us, it is time for online retailers to start thinking about getting their goods to their customers in the safest and speediest way. However, whilst delivering parcels speedily is an important concern, there are other things to bear in mind.

Cost is of course important; particularly as recovery from the recession is still in its early stages.

However, this can be used to your advantage of course. It is likely you have proposals already in your desk, but when challenging them remember that a cost reduction can compromise service levels.

You may not necessarily be able to get their rates lowered though; so ask for more for your money. Are twenty four hour help lines included for example? What about a personal account manager? All these things can be asked for. Remember though, it’s a two way street – be prepared to give a little in the form of guaranteed minimum orders etc.

But of course, delivering parcels safely is the most important (along with delivering on time). Be sure to fully understand what compensation measures are in place for any failures regards this.  Often your high value and most precious items are not covered by the insurance or the insurance is based upon the weight of an item.

Courier services perform extremely well by and large, and they are measured by their speed and customer service. They do not make a habit of breaking or damaging items of course; it just isn’t good business sense! But make sure you are covered in all eventualities.

You can of course do it yourself with regards delivering parcels safely to your customers too; by ensuring the products are well packaged and protected. It’s a nice touch for your best customers, but you will need to have a chat with Nigel Grainger about minimising your corporate manslaughter risks if you do.

Happy deliveries!

Sending parcels abroad

Out of the 10 or so telephone quotes I answer a day, the most frequent is how much to send a parcel to… and then an EU country or outlying island is named.

So I tell the potential customer how much and they 9/10 say its too expensive, so I ask how much they were expecting to pay and the answer is always in the region of £2-3. How can anyone cover their costs let alone make a profit if people are expecting to only pay ‘domestic small parcel’ rate to send something international?

Why so expensive? well staff are involved, they have to be paid at least minimum wage. Would you work for nothing? No? then why expect our staff to? Fuel is involved, pensions have to be paid into, vans maintained and all of that costs money. Parcel companies operate on volume, it isn’t cost effective to ship one small package half a continent… but it is to ship many small packages.

So save yourself some time and money, when looking to move small parcels less than 5kgs, try worldwide-parcelservices first because that is one of the cheapest options.

Be aware of what distance and factors are involved in your parcels journey, the further it goes, the more it costs.

If it is fragile, glass or bulky then you need a courier – and that is more expensive than than a parcel company but the service is completely different.
