A courier for heavy items

Some things just cannot go by post, they may be oversize and they may be overweight. In some cases they are both. When that happens you need a courier for heavy items, you also need to decide the urgency of the cargo or freight that needs delivery.

If you have a heavy desk, and it cannot be taken apart and it has to be on the bosses office tomorrow, then you need a same day courier that has a two man team.

As the item is over 30kgs, you will need two people to lift and secure the heavy desk and then deliver and in some cases install it.

A light desk can be flat packed and posted or sent via a pallet network for next day delivery. Posting and pallet networks will deliver to the kerbside or reception area, they do not offer the added extra of installing it and you may wish to do that yourself.

What about really heavy items?

Like a pallet of slabs? Or a bag of bricks? Again non urgent they can go via the pallet networks, but you will need to double check the maximum weights your pallet network will take per pallet. You may find it more economically viable to use the same day courier in this instance, as they charge per distance and not per weight – the van used will be the nearest van to take your capacity of slabs or bricks.

Top Tip – check what the surcharges are before you book with a pallet networks, you may find hidden fuel charges, hidden weight charges and other hidden extras.

Just because it’s heavy, it doesn’t mean it cannot be deliver swiftly, but you will need to source the right courier service for the items that need delivering.

It’s a matter of urgency

How to decide whether something is same day delivery or next day delivery.

As I write in the title, it’s a matter of urgency and that is usually decided by the client but it’s also the matter of confidentiality. In the past we have delivered evidence for court cases, its had to be delivered in confidence and to strict deadlines. It cannot be sent by mail, if it gets lost there is no case. Our vehicles are unmarked and have no sign writing, some may think we are missing an advertising trick but we are actually blending into the background – there is nothing to say we are a courier, nothing to indicate what we have is confidential or high value, nothing to indicate who we work for.

Our customers quite like this, it means their customers don’t need to know about any warehouse staffing issues or that they have had to get a courier in for the day to deal with their surplus, it’s all done confidentially. They love that our drivers provide great customer service on their behalf, something they don’t get when they have agency temp workers.

Back to urgency, how urgent is urgent delivery?

If it saves lives, it’s urgent.
If it saves a considerable amount of money, it’s urgent.
If the delay is going to cost you a considerable amount of money, it’s urgent.
If the your client is unhappy, and it could cost you their business, it’s urgent.

And you can always give them the option – “I can get it delivered to you within a couple of hours or I can have it delivered overnight, what suits you best? How urgent is it?” and in giving them the choice, you are building the relationship further and they can see how far you are willing to go to meet their requirements. When you have your answer, you only have to ring your same day courier and make the arrangements.

How do you deal with your urgent deliveries?

Christmas gets earlier and earlier every year!

How To Select Your Same Day Courier Service for Christmas Deliveries

With the holiday season here already, it is likely that online retailers have already been bombarded with proposals from a raft of same day courier service companies touting for their business. There are some excellent deals to be had too, if you know how to play the game right. But how do you decide which courier will be best for you?

Of course, a key factor in your decision making process will be the bottom line cost. However, it is not always best to go with the cheapest, nor is it best to go with the most expensive though.

If there is a company you have had good dealing with in the past, or, heard good things about, see if you can get them to come down on their rates but in doing that you may lose part of what makes their services so good.

If you can guarantee them a certain level of orders, (perhaps you have advance orders yourself, or have an exclusive product), this will really work in your favor. Tell them about it.

Customer service is of course important so do a little digging around. Ask your business associates about them. As mentioned earlier, you may have heard one or two good reports. But have these been an exception?

Do not be afraid to ask the courier companies to provide you with contact details of previous customers or testimonials. If they are unwilling to share these details, ask why – confidentiality is one reason, but not every customer is a confidential customer. No testimonials? then it’s up to you whether you take that chance with your Christmas deliveries.

Other questions to bear in mind regards tracking services, personal account managers, and twenty four hour contact and helpdesk facilities.

Finally, it is always wise to diversify; you already know this of course. So apply this to your use of same day courier service companies. Many companies will be stronger on some areas than others, and have a particular knowledge of certain regions. And should one slip up, you will always have the existing relationship to call upon. Too many slips ups and they are not the right courier as they are damaging your business.

Happy Christmas deliveries!

Do you consider your same day courier as an integral part of your business?

When you check each part of your organisations business processes, do you include your same day courier in the process?  If not, why not?

They represent your company and the image of your company to your customer. If you have an online shop, you may never actually see your customer or meet them but your courier will.

Is the person delivering your goods smart and presentable? You spend a fortune on getting your customers to buy from your smart, sleek interactive website but the person delivering the goods – they represent you and your business. Joe Blogs in dirty jeans, a bettered van and a dog in the front is how you want your customers to remember you?

How and when do you get your paperwork back from the courier? Do you know your goods have arrived? Do you find yourself chasing the courier on the phone several times a day asking where they are?

Perhaps it’s time to revisit those processes.
