When time is money, what do you use your courier for?

Many companies and organisations use a courier service to shuttle items across the county and deliver freight or cargo from one of their branches to another. Couriers have other uses to.

Sensitive documents and time critical information such as contracts are expertly delivered by couriers. Of course a staff member can deliver such items but you risk wasting time and money

You may be thinking “Bank/ post office not very far, get  the receptionist to do it or one of the admins, they can do it…” Sure, the phone may get unprofessionally answered to your  potential new customer, no biggie but you having a staff member drive their own vehicle to the bank / post office / customers office could cost you big time – corporate manslaughter anyone?

(please see H&S and couriers blog for more details)

One thing a many business people do not realize is that a courier service can help reduce many of your day to day tasks for you as well freeing up more time for you to concentrate on the things that matter in your business.

Some of the things that a courier can do for you include

  • paying your bills at the post office
  • going to your bank and making cash or cheque deposits
  • getting and delivering tickets to a show or a sports event
  • Collecting your passport
  • Collecting your luggage at the airport

When you are feeling stressed out and overwhelmed at work, think about using a courier service to help reduce some of the more mundane tasks that have to be done yet take up so much of your valuable time. When time is money, you could be making more by getting someone else to do the time consuming jobs.

The three major signs you need to change your same day courier services

Sometimes there are things that happen with your deliveries that leave your customers less than happy. In this blog I write about three of the warning indicators that you need a new same day courier service to deliver your freight or cargo.

  • You frequently call your same day courier to follow-up on collections as they haven’t called you.
  • You frequently call your courier to check if your package has been delivered and received. They don’t contact you with details of delivery if you have specified this.
  • Your client frequently calls you to ask if the freight or cargo has been despatched as they are still waiting for it.

Whilst some delays are unavoidable, the same day couriers communication should be fluid and frequent, so that on the rare occasions our clients customers pick up the phone – they are fully informed. If you find staff are wasting time chasing couriers when they should be doing what you pay them to do the chances are you need to be looking at a new courier to deliver your goods.

Same day couriers – the frontline of your company

As a small business or manufacturer, you know how hard it is to make a sale, make the product to the customers spec and then you get it delivered…

Only the delivery aspect is what your customer will recall, as it’s the main interaction with you after they have bought their product. Even though the delivery part of your service may be outsourced, customers may have a negative perception of your business.

The reasons that they may have a negative perception is the ‘scrimping’ that goes on with finding a same day courier to deliver your goods. It’s not all about saving money but cost is generally the first thing our customers ask about. Are you the cheapest at what you do? No? neither are we – we offer incredible value for money because you know by booking our same day courier services your item will actually be delivered by our team of professional drivers, it will not be transhipped, it will not be sent on a 500 mile journey to then start it’s journey to your customer and it will be delivered by people who care. No, we don’t load our vehicles like the bloke in the picture.

Does that really make a difference? yes, it does. If the delivery isn’t done correctly, you may find yourself paying for a re-delivery. If your same day courier has packaged another 15 items onto their vehicle your goods may not get to their destination in one piece. More importantly, if the goods are co-loaded they need to go with compatible items, a strong smelling item shouldn’t be packaged with porous goods. If your courier is giving you a cheap price because ‘he is going that way already’ then your items will be co-loaded.

So imagine your customer, sitting home all day wondering when their driver is going to turn up with their goods. They ring you, you ring the courier and the courier says “between one and five pm”. They picked up the goods from you that morning and you know yourself that the journey is just 90 minutes away, so why are they taking so long? You pass the message onto your customer and at 5pm the item still has yet to arrive. Your customer is stewing and has probably been on the phone a few more times, each time more upset… where are their goods? what time will they get here?

The item is finally delivered at 6pm. Just one hour late but your customer is unhappy and unlikely to buy from you again. Why? because the small saving you made in getting your goods delivered equated into a big hassle for the person receiving it.

You can avoid it. You can keep your customer happy with the delivery experience also.

Same Day Couriers and Parcel Carriers

There are a few types of couriers / courier services and they are easily confused when you don’t use them often.

First we have the most common type which are the parcel couriers or carriers. They take parcels and packages up to 25kgs in weight and when they are sorted (usually at a central depot) they are then multi- dropped to their destination points. Prices range from £ 5 upwards and delivery is done overnight, 48 hours, 2-3 days or another length of time that you specify.

Most people when they call a courier they assume that they are the parcel carriers, they are getting a low cost but high volume service. Breakages are not uncommon. Insurance tend to be low and it’s a nightmare to make a claim. The paperwork can tie you in knots!

Check before you book what type of courier service you are getting.

Then we have Same day couriers or Express couriers who work with urgent consignments that have to be delivered right NOW! These are more expensive because they are ad hoc and a specialist service in some cases. Arrow Light Haulage specialises in same day courier work with vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes. Breakages, well so far we have had 100% success in 7 years of trading. We are very lucky.

Confusing the two types of courier service may mean your parcel is dispatched same day but costs you 4 times the price! Check which service you require and if you are not sure, then call for advice.
