If it’s valuable a same day courier should deliver it

If you have something that is valuable there isn’t a doubt in my mind who should deliver it. It should be us, or a another courier within the same day courier industry. If we cannot deliver something, we are always happy to recommend others within the transport industry.

Say you have a variety of items that need delivering –  the same day courier can inventory them at the collection point and call through what exactly they are carrying on your behalf. This service is popular with items that have to be returned under court instruction or a delivery of time sensitive materials. You just let the courier company know that this is required at the time of booking.

At the end destination or the delivery point, the inventory is handed over and signed for again. No loss of goods in transit and evidence that the delivery has taken place. Everyone in the chain is happy at what has taken place.

Compare that to other delivery services and what it would cost to factor this in?

Sometimes the personal side of delivery can be overlooked which is a shame. Good customer service plays a part in lots of peoples businesses. It plays a huge part in ours.

When you call us, a human being answers. Sometimes it goes to voicemail – that is because we are on the phone.

We answer our emails swiftly, respond to tweets and queries on Facebook.

We know the true value of human interaction in our business. Yes, we track our vehicles but you can also speak to the driver, which is dead handy if there is a traffic jam and you need updating as to when your cargo will arrive. Roads and driving conditions change rapidly and that also affects how your items are delivered.

If it’s valuable, knowing and talking to the people in the delivery chain can make all the difference.

  • Things don’t get lost
  • They don’t get broken
  • They don’t get left behind
  • You have complete peace of mind

If items are that important – we have delivered court evidence, medical samples, fuel samples, then you need to be able to communicate and have peace of mind.  We provide both.

Couriers and parcel costs.

Recently I have been blogging about getting things organised in time for Christmas deliveries. Another topic that seems to come up around this time of year is why does it cost so much to send something by sameday courier rather than by parcel?

If Royal Mail did not have significant volume (millions of packages, parcels and letters on a daily basis), then it would cost you on average £36 to send a letter from Aberdeen to Southampton… because so many of us use the mail system, the price comes down significantly.

But the more a parcel has to travel, the more it costs. Common sense really as more fuel is being consumed, more resources are being used and the delivery driver works more hours.

Yesterday I received a call from a potential customer, he didn’t know what service he was looking for and he didn’t understand the system.  I was happy to explain the services and the differences but he didn’t want to know, he just wanted to know how much.

He wanted an item of garden equipment moved from Edinburgh to Dorset, that’s roughly 369 miles. He has quoted £85 plus VAT making it a very reasonable 37p per mile. He was lucky that we had a driving going that way, a truly dedicated vehicle would have cost much more.  If you have a company car, you are given a minimum of 40p per mile to drive it places. So 37p a mile is less that the going rate that the RAC recommend to cover the cost of wear and tear to your vehicle etc.

Well the potential customer wasn’t happy, he felt that the price was excessive.

How long would it take you to drive 369 miles? Collect the item, deliver it, process  the paper work and then extract payment.

You are looking at 8 hours at the least… And that is just in this country! Imagine having to drive a package to the ports, onto the ferry, through customs, onto toll roads and then to it’s destination – easily several hundred miles, yet customers think that it’s cheap to deliver because they can get a ferry for a £1, no thoughts about the drivers wages or fuel costs!

Well we explained all this to the potential customer and he said “you are totally rubbish as you overcharge, I am going to post it instead for £30″. I decided not to email and say you are comparing two completely different delivery services! Or offer him a copy of our free buyers guide to courier services that we give away as a free report when you subscribe to our newsletter. It would be time wasted. Instead I thought about what I could do to help change peoples perception of parcel delivery and sameday courier delivery.

It goes beyond parcel security, parcels change hands many times where something that is being transported by sameday courier doesn’t. Less chance of breakages, less chance of an item getting lost. For something that isn’t fragile and easily replaceable, then use the the postal service, you are just wasting time calling and getting quotes for services that really are not comparable.

Time is money after all.

I need a same day courier….How much?

This is often the opening line of many phone calls for quotes.

Well, we need a bit more information than that. We need to know the weight of the item and it’s dimensions, that’s so we can send the right vehicle for you. We also need to know if we are legally allowed to carry the items in question.

The next bit of the quote usually results in a sharp intake of breath. Today, I was quoting for something to go nearly 380 miles, and the stunned “why so much?…” was barely breathed by the customer.

Why so much?

Because you are booking a dedicated vehicle, it’s the safest way to get your good to their destination. There is no transhipping, co-loading or any other mucking about, your item is collected and delivered, the same day. That makes it an Express or Premium  courier or delivery service. It gets there on time, and in one piece. It’s the perfect service for valuable items, antiques and fragile goods.

If you want it cheaper, don’t leave it to the last minute. If you want it there in one piece, don’t leave it to anyone else.
